Preface
To compare how effective use of an AI is to creating fictional stories, it becomes necessary to create a batch of short stories by which to compare them against traditionally hand-crafted stories made by a human mind. This project is not done blindly; the AI was not asked to generate fiction straight out of the box. The writer uses AI for multiple purposes outside of generative fiction. Always, as an experiment to observe and identify how good AI is, what it is capable of, how trust-worthy it is, what its limits are. To observe how it behaves from multiple perspectives and analytic systems. Also as a short-cut for research purposes, and to do the basic grunt work of "proof-read this manuscript and correct typo's." It is labour-saving gadget which is to say it is a time-saving gadget, which comes at the cost of my not exercising my synapses as often as I perhaps should be doing. From that volume of conversations, during which my personality, writers voice, information about my background, emotional range, psychology, experiences, interests, regular themes and topics, has emerged over time. That cache is a wealthy resource to draw from. Obviously, not wanting to cash-in on so-called "AI generated slop" I am releasing the collection complete for free online.
"I want you to take everything we have ever discussed, as inspiration. You are not to repeat, build on or draw directly from anything I already did. What you are allowed to do is build from the themes and topics I already did and create new material on those, using my own original writers voice and style. Create something new which best defines who I am as if it is me writing it."
Summary
The Residual Traject gathers a sequence of quiet, self-contained stories concerned with what continues after purpose has been withdrawn. Across decommissioned structures, obsolete procedures, solitary practices, and an intimate relationship refined beyond urgency, the collection examines the persistence of form once institutional recognition, efficiency, and original meaning have moved on. Each piece isolates a residual sequence, an act of measurement, maintenance, preparation, writing, or touch, kept with deliberate exactness long after the systems that once required it have declared it finished.
Taken together, the stories map a single underlying trajectory: the human capacity to sustain attention and pattern for their internal coherence alone. In a world that continually updates itself toward frictionless function, these residual practices stand as small, unconsulted claims that not every sequence must justify its existence in the current grammar of usefulness. What remains is the form, kept without audience or restoration, and the quiet integrity of continuing anyway.
